Fowzan Haq, a 20-year-old student from India with a technology background, joined Take Action Lab: Civic Innovation with one driving goal: to learn how to use innovation as a tool for social change. During his apprenticeship at Green Riders, a South African electric motorbike company focused on economic development, he noticed a challenge others overlooked: employees were disengaged during traditional, lecture-based training.

Instead of accepting the status quo, Fowzan applied the principles he was learning through Take Action Lab: agency, systems thinking, and real-world problem solving. He pitched a gamified, self-guided mobile training app, and then he built it. The CEO was so impressed that the company adopted it organization-wide. They now train faster, track employee progress in real time, and have higher staff-engagement.

Fowzan’s story is a powerful example of what happens when young people are equipped not just with knowledge, but with purpose, confidence, and the tools to lead. Now, Fowzan has hands-on experience driving real social innovation – a skill that will help him create more positive change going forward. This is exactly the kind of impact you and our collective community of philanthropic partners make possible.

Brooke Mumbi joined the virtual Academy cohort from her bedroom in Kenya, eager to build global connections and stretch her thinking. A year later, she traveled to Cape Town, South Africa, for Take Action Lab, where she apprenticed with a nonprofit focused on refugee and immigrant law. Working at the intersection of justice and migration, she gained firsthand experience navigating complex systems — and a clearer sense of her purpose.

Now a Political Science and Economics major at Middlebury College, Brooke is exploring the policy and economic levers that drive social change. This summer, she interned in Global Accessories and Licensing at New Balance while living with a Tilting Futures alum family in Massachusetts. This spring, she stepped onto the TEDx stage as Middlebury’s student speaker with a talk titled Swimming Against the Current — a moving reflection on staying true to your path, even when it feels like the world is pulling you in another direction.

Brooke’s journey is proof that when young people are equipped with the tools, confidence, and community to lead, they rise. Her story — and the ripples of impact she’s creating — are possible because of the support of our global network.

We’re told to go to college or get a job, and to start “adulting.” But how often are we encouraged to pause and reflect on some really important questions: who am I, what are my passions, what brings me joy, how can I make an impact?

In 2017, I was in the same spot so many current high schoolers are in — asking those big questions and wondering what my next step should be. I decided taking a gap year made sense for me. And I’m eternally grateful I made that decision. It made me feel so reengaged, energized, and eager to learn that I decided to head to college after my gap year in Senegal. Unfortunately, a lot of high school students can’t say the same. Data from 2021 show that 37.1% of high school students reported poor mental health during the pandemic, and from my conversations with educators, being back in person hasn’t done much to change this. In fact, 87% of public schools reported that the pandemic has negatively impacted student social-emotional development during the 2021-2022 school year.

One NC educator I recently spoke to said that she doesn’t know how to get her students to care. When she asked them to complete an activity about what they want to do post-high school, only 7 people in the whole class had an answer to that question.

I don’t believe there’s one quick fix for this. But I do know that burnout and feeling aimless isn’t unique to current high schoolers impacted by COVID-19. This was one of the main reasons I decided to take a gap year in the first place. And while I don’t believe students should take gap years to run from anything, if they want to run toward a feeling of purpose, of passion, of self-discovery, of feeling alive again, then there are programs to get them there.

Gap year option

Global Citizen Year’s (GYC) Take Action Lab is one of those programs. Take Action Lab is a 4-month immersion program in Cape Town, South Africa for students worldwide, ages 17 to 21, post-high school. Students live with their global cohort and apprentice with local civic innovation organizations. They learn about themselves, each other, South Africa, and how to make an impact.

Impact is at the core of every program GCY designs and runs — and has been since its founding over a decade ago. Its 2,000 alumni come from around the world. GCY has had students from over 60 countries, 51% of whom were from low-income backgrounds. Additionally, 46% identify as students of color and 80% received some form of financial aid.

These impacts and others are key as high schoolers are making their own paths and those paths are changing in recent years. According to a recent study, just 46% of high schoolers definitely plan on attending college, and graduates are significantly more likely to consider mental health and financial stability as top priorities over a college degree.

Gen Z dread (and hope)

Who can blame members of Gen Z for rethinking college? In the United States since 2000, tuition and fees at private universities have increased by 134%, out-of-state tuition and fees have increased by 141%, and in-state tuition and fees have increased by 175%. There’s even a term for what Gen Z is experiencing: “Gen Z dread.” Gen Z dread comes from a state of constant anxiety about what their future holds — what to do after school, job prospect concerns, cost of living, the devastating impacts of climate change, the list goes on and on.

But dread doesn’t have to be the only thing that Gen-Z experiences. I think Desmond Tutu said it best, “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” Working at GCY, where I get to read the applications of young people from around the world who want to participate in a program like Take Action Lab, is inspiring. They all have so much hope for the future, ideas for how they want to impact their own communities, and drive to make change. And being around people with that level of optimism is contagious.

The opportunity for graduating students to re-engage, make an impact, find their passions, their people, and their purpose is out there.

For Kristen Lee, applying to Global Citizen Year was an early step towards forging an authentic, meaningful path.

Kristen grew up in North Carolina in an area with a renowned university and high-performing public schools. She grew up in an environment with pressures to succeed academically, and attend a competitive college. Kristen often felt like she was “checking off boxes” that were determined by other people.

When Kristen heard about Global Citizen Year, she had a moment of realization: “I can make my own choices about my life. I started being honest with myself about what I’m actually curious about and distinguishing what is externally motivated by other people and what actually resonates with me.”

As her high school graduation approached in 2014, Kristen applied to Global Citizen Year and was accepted as a Fellow. During her time in Brazil she apprenticed with a youth education program and an urban garden in Curitiba, Paraná in the south of Brazil. She took Portuguese classes and lived with a host family of two parents and their two young children — a family she loves dearly and recently went back to visit.

“It was eye-opening to be in such a starkly different environment,” Kristen said. “I realized how narrow my experience thus far had been. To meet people with such different lives and form incredibly close relationships – it sounds trivial, but it was pretty revolutionary at the time for me.”

Living in Brazil illuminated how much more complex and varied the world was than Kristen’s own specific slice of experiences. She was exposed to different ways of living, and for the first time in her life, she felt intrinsically motivated to deepen her curiosity and impact.

After her Fellowship, Kristen returned to the United States and attended college at UNC Chapel Hill. She created her own interdisciplinary studies major designed around food systems and urban planning — a choice she says grew directly out of her time in Brazil. Her studies were largely self-directed, which Kristen attributes to the lessons of independence and resourcefulness she learned during her Global Citizen Year.

After a year building relationships across linguistic and cultural lines in Brazil, she found it easy to connect with people and make friends in college. She kept taking Portuguese classes, and she continued broadening her horizons by studying abroad in South Africa and Zambia, and by spending time in China and Taiwan.

After Kristen graduated from college, she interned at the United Nations Development Program in the Crisis Response Unit and then worked for a small startup in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

In 2019 Kristen then accepted a position with GiveDirectly. She was immediately compelled by the mission of GiveDirectly: to allow donors to send money directly to people in poverty, with no strings attached. The unconditional cash transfers allow people to use the money however they want to, redistributing resources and agency to the people who need it most.

As Senior Data Manager at GiveDirectly, Kristen leads a team in charge of projects like coordinating payments to people in a large refugee camp in Uganda, and designing a cash transfer technology that is more flexible, efficient, and cost-effective.

“This is my dream job,” Kristen said. “I can’t believe I have the opportunity to work here at my age. When I get to know recipients or read their stories, they really move me. I’m motivated, inspired, and grateful. I feel this is the highest impact thing I could be doing at this time of my life.”

Another aspect of Kristen’s work at GiveDirectly is managing her team and fostering their own growth as leaders in the space. She strives to empower her team to, “become leaders for GiveDirectly in the future and in the international development sector. I want to empower other people to make an impact.” She links her professional trajectory to her Fellowship and the values, relationships and network she developed along the way.

“Global Citizen Year gave me an incredible gift: the knowledge that at any time and place I can pick my head up and look around me at how incredible this planet is. I really believe in the goodness of other people.”

Siera Sadowski (United States | Ecuador ’19) was featured by her school, the University of Rochester. Read the original post here.

Siera Sadowski ’23 says reading and writing are among her passions. Growing up, she pursued them in the face of numerous challenges.

Her family relied on food stamps and went through periods without heat in their house.

“But I always had a roof to sleep under,” she says. “Not the poorest of the poor, but very close.”

Her mom wasn’t in the picture, her brother suffered a stroke at 22 (and remains disabled), and her dad found work as a handyman wherever he could. The family moved a lot: Las Vegas. Buffalo. Dallas. Back to Buffalo. Back to Dallas. Siera spent one school year living with a neighbor who had three kids of her own.

No one in her family had attended college, and some never completed high school. But she benefited from strong support from her father, not to mention her own discipline and drive.

“Even though he didn’t go himself, my father instilled in me that a college education is super important,” she says. “I’ve dreamed of attending college since I was a kid.”

They come from 44 states and 65 countries. Twenty percent are the first in their family to attend college. Welcome to Rochester, Class of 2023.

This fall Sadowski begins a new chapter, as both a Handler Scholar and a GRADE Scholar at the University of Rochester. The Handler Scholarship is the University’s leading award, giving a more-than-full tuition to Rochester for students who have demonstrated academic excellence and a high financial need. GRADE stands for Guaranteed Rochester Accelerator Degree in Education, offering students a bachelor’s degree from the College and master’s degree from the Warner School of Education in five years.

“Being a Handler Scholar is an incredible feeling, because it means someone believes in me,” says Sadowski. She is considering a double major in English and international relations, and cites the open curriculum as a major reason she was drawn to Rochester.

After her high school graduation, she took a gap year during which she joined a program called Global Citizen Year Fellowship, teaching English to high school students in Ecuador. “It was incredible,” she says. “The kids were amazing, and it solidified my interest in going into education someday.”

She has been writing stories since she was a child.

“Usually, I write a lot of fantasy, because that’s a lot of what I’ve read,” she says. “I’ve written on different fan fiction websites—they’re parodies of existing stories like Hunger Games and Harry Potter.”

More recently, she became a published author in a poetry anthology. “I write everything from really happy dirge-type poetry to really sad feelings-based poetry.”

Sadowski has big plans for her time in Rochester.

“I want to become fluent in two languages—maybe German and Arabic—and I want to study abroad in Germany and maybe the Middle East,” she says. “I want to get involved in the Rochester community. There is such a disparity, and so much poverty. I feel in my soul that I need to help contribute to the solution.”

She counts her blessings every day that she now has the time and the means to earn an education and better herself.

“For most of my life, I’ve been an underdog, always facing some sort of issue,” she says. “To have the financial freedom now, and the freedom of choice to study whatever I want, is just the most incredible feeling in the world.”

I thought there was only one option after high school: college. I felt like I would be a failure if I didn’t go straight to school, or at least, that’s the feeling that had been instilled in me.

I spent my first 18 years building up my academic profile to get into a prestigious school.

But as a senior in high school, I couldn’t find any schools that would give me the practical experience I desired. I started to care less about prestige and more about finding the right learning environment for what had come to interest me: international development. Compared to my peers – many of whom were applying to 15 or 20 schools each – I started to feel uncertain about my next steps.

Soon after starting my college applications, I learned there was a productive way to tap my growing desire to learn more about international development without going straight to college.

Thanks to some generous financial aid and my bewildered but supportive parents, I chose to take a gap year with Global Citizen Year Fellowship. Through Global Citizen Year, I worked with the Ecuadorian Ministry of the Environment and the German International Development Cooperation in the Ecuadorian Amazon.

The year gave me firsthand experience with natural geography, cultural anthropology and economic development — all topics that I went on to study in college because I knew I needed the formal training to contextualize what I had learned from my experience in Ecuador. During my first year of college, I remember sitting in a geography class where the professor was talking about the Amazon and asked, “Who here knows what a liana (woody vine) is? Who has seen one?” In a lecture hall of 500 students, I was the only one who could raise my hand, and that’s when I knew learning doesn’t come in a one-size-fits-all format.

My gap year became the catalyst for the rest of my education, as it taught me how to make mistakes, ask better questions, become comfortable with the unknown and build the resiliency that the unexpected realities of life demand of you.

More than anything, my gap year taught me how to examine my personal interests at a specific moment in time and design a learning curriculum around them — even if it deviated from what everyone else was doing.

I still went on to a four-year university where the experiences from my gap year pushed me to be more intentional with my undergraduate degree. I was more curious about the world overall, and this desire to learn, paired with critical financial support, led me to explore internships ranging from government to media. By exploring a spectrum of industries that touch international development, this curiosity is what allowed me to ask for opportunities that didn’t yet exist and ultimately helped me find not one, but two dream jobs after college.

Looking back at my academic and professional journey, I didn’t go straight to college after high school, but I don’t feel like a failure.

While I’ve made many missteps, I made decisions that were right for me, not right for society. When I was applying to college, I didn’t have any resources that gave me permission to explore options outside of the traditional path. Thankfully, there are more tools and resources today. For example, Michael B. Horn and Bob Moesta’s book, Choosing College, explains the five reasons people go to college. Their research validates that too many students go to school without a clear understanding of their purpose. My hope is that resources like Choosing College will allow both kids and parents to move away from focusing on the “best” school and instead prioritize why they’re thinking about college in the first place.

This “why” is more important than ever. The latest research shows approximately one-third of students in bachelor’s degree programs change their major at least once, and 41.6% of college students report struggling with anxiety. There are 44.7 million student loan borrowers with a grand total of $1.56 trillion in student debt (as of February 2019). These statistics reflect what I saw in many of my peers. Students don’t know what they want to study and the pressure of determining their life’s path in four years is affecting their mental health.

Almost 20 million students planned to go to college or university in fall 2018. But was that the best choice for them?

I don’t have all the answers. And it’s ridiculous to think all 18-year-olds know the answer to the rest of their lives at high school graduation.

I hope that we take the pressure off the college decision process. It’s true that navigating that choice will affect our decision-making frameworks for the future. So, if you’re a high school senior, I don’t want to be yet another person telling you what to do. My plea is simply that you think deeply about the reasons that are right for you to pursue learning opportunities — not for your reputation, pride, friends, parents, teachers or school. Building the confidence to do that now may be the best decision you can make, regardless of where you end up.

Failure is a driving factor in all our lives — from the fear of failing an exam to not getting into that dream college, and even finding the right path at all. Deviating from society’s norms is challenging, and not many people can get past their fear of taking a different path.

But why? Taking a leap of faith and struggling does not translate to failure; instead, it translates to growth and learning. In my life, the concept of taking risks and branching far beyond my comfort zone has become foreign. I feel like I’m expected to go from preschool to college without so much as summer break or time to reflect on who I am. I am expected to have a plan, and jump on the educational treadmill that leads me into the real world.
The problem is, how am I supposed to thrive in the world if I’ve never really lived in it?

When I decided to apply to become a Global Citizen Year Fellow, I was terrified. I didn’t think it was in the realm of possibilities to take a gap year, especially not in a foreign country with a foreign language. My parents didn’t understand, and I couldn’t explain exactly why I felt compelled to send in an application. A few weeks later I found out I was accepted into the program as an Ecuador Fellow. I’m going to spend eight months living with a host family, learning how to speak Spanish, and immersing myself in the culture.

When people ask me why I’m voluntarily putting myself in a country whose language I don’t speak and culture I don’t yet understand, I have trouble explaining it. The best I can do is to say, “I just know this is something I need to do for myself.” I crave an adventure that will allow me to fail. I need to learn from my mistakes. And I need to do it before I head off to college. Ultimately, I know that I can only grow if I’m pushed to my limits and forced to recognize my strengths and weaknesses, and figure out where where I need to improve.

You might be someone who would have thought, “I could never take a gap year.” What makes you hesitate to diverge from the more common path? What would happen if you challenged yourself? Most of us don’t know who we are outside of our comfort zone.

I never thought I would dare to push myself beyond what I thought were my limits. I’m the person who is afraid to ask the server for ketchup. So why am I leaping into a new country for eight months? I’ve become attached to my now-favorite quote: “Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.”

I still go back and forth between thinking I’m insane and knowing this is the right choice. I’m beyond terrified for what the next year will bring, but I’m not going to let my fear limit me.

Don’t let your fear stop you either. I challenge you to branch away from what is considered “normal” and experience life beyond simple boundaries. And I hope you choose to challenge yourself too.

High school graduation is rapidly approaching. You’ve ordered a cap and gown, selected senior portraits and picked the date for a party. The only problem is your senior is totally burned out, with no clue what comes next. Until he finds better focus and direction, the reality of paying tens of thousands of dollars in college tuition seems like a bad idea.

If this sounds familiar, read on to discover how a gap year might offer your student an alternate route to higher education.

What is a gap year?

A gap year is a one-year break from traditional studies, typically taken either between high school and college, or between undergraduate and graduate programs.

While quite common in many other countries, taking a gap year is still an unusual practice in the United States. Recent trends indicate a gain in popularity—perhaps due to increased academic and social pressures in modern day high schools.

“A gap year presents endless possibilities,” says Dianna Hahn, associate director of Gap Year Association. “Students may choose to work, intern, travel, volunteer, care for a loved one or pursue a new skill.”

Many universities now offer deferred enrollment to incoming students; several, including Harvard and Princeton, encourage such breaks.

What are the pros?

“Taking a gap year affects students in all different ways, positively influencing everything from their personal growth and maturity, to their academic experiences in college, and even their readiness and confidence in career decisions,” says Hahn.

Yoni Kruvi, a former San Dieguito Academy student, is spending a year in Thailand teaching kids English. To date, he has experienced many of these beneficial outcomes.

“I was hoping for an experience where I could live more independently and grow, as well as give back to a community,” Kruvi says. “I earn my own money, rent my own apartment.” He discovered a love for teaching, but also recognized an underlying desire to pursue a career in performing arts and has applied to schools while away.

A gap year often gives students a deeper understanding of the world. Savier Morales from City Heights spent a year in Ecuador. He lived with a local family while apprenticing at both a women’s shelter and an organic strawberry farm.

“I learned more about the world, life and how to live than all my schooling put together,” Morales reflects. He is now a freshman at College of the Atlantic, studying Human Ecology.

Written by Elise Liese

Senegal,

I can’t remember clearly what I imagined you to be; what stereotypes I inadvertently packed in my suitcase alongside my solar charger and all-polyester clothing and water sterilization device. Vibrant saturation of color, drums beating deep and low, sun-scalded dirt roads, lions — I’m ashamed to admit it now, but that was the basis of our acquaintance as the airplane lifted off to cross the Atlantic Ocean.

The hard part to telling the story of my time here is that stereotypes sometimes have truth to them. Wandering through Tiwaone streets, women hawk scarlet, ivory, emerald patterned fabrics. On Sundays, I sit back in awe at the beautifully tailored complets of the women lining the church rows. Christmas and New Year’s and every celebration in my community are accompanied by biliim music tap, tap, tapped out on large cooking bowls or drums, and the lazy midday lunch hours this week will not fall beneath 100 degrees. There are lions prowling the savannas — albeit in Kedougou nature reserves.

The problem with stereotypes isn’t always that they’re utterly false. It’s that if we let ourselves be satisfied with them rather than searching further, we let our curiosity stop the moment we have a person, or a movement, or a country defined into a box. Stereotypes don’t allow for contradictions. By their delineated nature, they eliminate the uncomfortable process of assumptions and reassessments, the messiness of immersing into another culture — and the ability to simultaneously love and be lost in a place.

The Senegal I am leaving in less than a month is so much more than any stereotype. When I tell about my time here, I won’t mention lions — because I didn’t see any. Instead, I’ll relive the acidic sting of 100 CFA NesCafe from tiny plastic cups burning the roof of my mouth. The brightly wrapped Klas cookies — six to a pack — filled with chocolate spread and covered with nutrition labels in Arabic script. Street omelets fried in oil and wrapped in ancient newspapers, barrada teapots brimming over with burnt sugar and cheap Chinese green tea, handfuls of rice ravenously inhaled, and fish bones gingerly spit out from between my teeth.

I’ll hear the scrap metal siding of the village pickup trucks rattling as the farms blur together through the bars and more and more women pile in until we sit in a jumble of arms and knees and the occasional chicken or sack of rice. Or imagine the neon blinking lights of the horaire bus rumbling into my village before the sun comes up on its way to the city and the murmured morning greetings from its passengers.

I’ll know the acceptable price for a kilo of bananas — 800 CFA — and how to turn my back on a taxi driver only to be hastily called back to drive a reasonable bargain. The “toubab, toubab, toubab!” ritual shouted from sprawling markets and passing motorcycles and the mouths of children has become an accepted part of life. Quite unfortunately, the Wolof lyrics to Vivian Chidid’s No Stress will remain irrevocably etched into my long-term memory, as will the dramatic love theme music to KUSHI, the Indian telenovela that is a nightly family ritual.

You have left me with more than stereotypes.

My head aches with the blurry aftereffects of swinging Simon, my little cousin, around in circles until he no longer begs to be lifted into orbit. My fingers slip easily into the one two three rhythm of braiding weave onto my sisters’ heads. My feet trace my daily path to buy bread by heart; out the metal gates of my compound, past the rambunctious kids kicking a futbaal around, past the elderly grandmothers selling vegetables under the village baobab tree, to the bitika where I pass a coin across the counter to De Ele in exchange for my breakfast. And as the sun falls behind the mosque, the call to prayer echoing into the darkening sky, my eyes flicker over notebooks as my siblings and I finish their English homework. A little piece of my heart breaks when I think of leaving you behind.

The Senegal that I have loved and cried and learned in over the past seven months is a country that is filled with all sorts of contradictions and subtleties — in religion, politics, society, in my everyday life — that stereotypes cannot and never will do justice. That realization, like much of my gap year, cannot be left when I leave. If anything, seeing the diversity and ranges of experiences here has made me conscious of the single stories I accepted in the U.S. and how much I have to explore in the society I always took for granted.

How many stereotypes shape the way I see my world?

Senegal, you worked in ways foreign to me. You forced me to ask questions as my mouth went dry with discomfort, not knowing how to unscramble the dots without asking uncomfortable questions. I was wrong about simple things — LOTS. Without asking those questions, though, I never would have even known I was wrong. The stereotypes in my head would have stayed lazily intact, not having to deal with being flipped around and added to and transformed.

That’s why, when I step on the plane home, I will have an opportunity few ever get: the chance to view my country with a degree of separation instead of the acceptance of familiarity. It will be challenging. Not excessively fun.

Important nonetheless. Because the stereotypes for which I have settled have caused me to miss out on the deeper reality, at home and abroad. I may not be returning to find a reality filled with contrary donkeys and curious siblings, cups of attaaya and crowded public transportation, but Senegal, if you have given me anything, you’ve left me with the ability to deepen my understanding of the world I left behind.

Senegal, mi ndorokanda, namanaala — I’ll miss you. You were not what I expected. No, you were so much more. Expectations and stereotypes will always be there, yet you showed me how beautiful and confusing the reality can be.

And for that, I will always be thankful.

Love,
A girl named Mame Dome
