On LearningWell Radio, Tilting Futures CEO Erin Lewellen reflects on the experience that shaped her own path and why immersive learning should play a bigger role in education.
For Tilting Futures CEO Erin Lewellen, the belief that education should extend beyond the classroom is personal.
On LearningWell Radio, Erin joins host Marjorie Malpiede to discuss the role immersive experiences can play in preparing young people for what comes next. She reflects on growing up in rural Oregon and her life-changing experience apprenticing abroad in South Africa, one that ignited her path towards social impact, and fuels her belief that these experiences should not be limited to what country you’re from, how much money your family has, or whether you’re from a rural or urban background.
That experience continues to shape Erin’s belief in an education that gives young people the chance to step into new environments, engage with different perspectives, and put their learning into practice.
Today, that belief comes to life through Take Action Lab, where students learn alongside community leaders, gain real-world experience, and build the skills needed for the future.

About Tilting Futures
Tilting Futures prepares young people to lead change in a complex world by developing the capacities that make connection across difference possible. Since 2010, the organization has served more than 3,000 students. Its flagship program, Take Action Lab, is an accredited, semester-length program built on an evidence-backed curriculum that develops the durable skills employers, higher education, and civic institutions increasingly recognize as foundational, including agency, self-awareness, perspective-taking, communication across difference, sense of belonging, and the orientation toward purposeful action. Alongside its direct program work, Tilting Futures’ systems change work is focused on making this kind of intentional capacity development a standard feature of how we prepare young people for adulthood, in their communities, in college, and in career. Tilting Futures is headquartered in San Francisco, California.
