I had never though that wanting to wear my natural hair would be an every
day battle. There is not a single day I’m not asked When are you going to
braid your hair? Why you don’t braid it?. I had heard multiple time “it
looks ugly like that”, “No having braids or Afro hair is bad”, “you look
like a boy if you don’t braid it” being the last one the most confusing as
boys here don’t have big Afros, they shave it or keep it short. I remember
having this bad connotation myself when I was a little girl and people
said all of the pretty girls had this long straight hair, I was shown in
television and media every single day that beautiful girl have this type of
hair. They did not tell me Afro hair was ugly but they never told me it was
beautiful either. Hopefully my mom made sure I never straighten it or used
a relaxer even if I wanted to, until I was older to realize I love my hair
and there is nothing wrong with it. That doesn’t change the fact that
people want constantly to straighten it or ask my why I don’t do it or that
I was never able to find a single afro hair product in Mexico.
But I thought coming to Senegal where all the artists and majority of ads
feature black people, this connotation and questions would stop. I was
wrong. Is crazy how they still have all of this bad connotation about
their own hair. I see how the media has a big influence with all the
commercial and artist wearing a long stray wig, I know colonization had a
big influence on this but being this such a long time ago I thought it
would be reduced or almost no existent. However it’s the opposite, you can
find more relaxer that Afro hair product, all of the product easily
available have more chemical that in my old school lab. I had found more
natural and variable hair product in Wales than here. I can count with one
hand how many girl I have seen with their natural hair and is usually short
and not wear with pride.. I never seen so many wigs and extensions before.
Their hair is so damage but they don’t know why, they don’t realize about
how bad is what their putting in their hair. I’m being constantly ask how
to have an Afro? When they do have the same hair as me, they just don’t
had the products to take care of it properly, that is why it doesn’t grow,
that is why it falls and people lose their hair much younger here.
My not braiding my hairs and constantly saying: “no I like more my Afro
hair like this” it had become an statement. I’m no saying I would not
braid it since I like to do it, is part of the culture and has a lot of
heritage in it. However I want to keep my natural Afro hair out as long as
I can, since in Senegal is no common, because I like it and because I
notice people started asking how do I keep it like that and not why.
Nunca había pensado que querer usar mi cabello natural sería una batalla de
todos los días. No hay un solo día que no me pregunten: ¿Cuándo te vas a
trenzar el cabello? ¿Por qué no lo haces? He escuchado varias veces “se ve
feo así”, “No tener trenzas o cabello afro es malo”, “te ves como un niño
si no lo haces”, siendo el último el más confuso ya que los chicos aquí no
Tienes grandes Afros, los afeitas o dejan corto. Recuerdo que tuve estas
mala connotaciones también cuando era niña . la gente siempre decía que
todas las chicas hermosas tiene el cabello largo y lacio, todos los días me
mostraban en la televisión y en los medios que las chicas hermosas tienen
este tipo de cabello. Nunca me dijeron que el pelo afro fuera feo, pero
nunca me dijeron que fuera hermoso tampoco. Por suerte, mi madre se aseguró
de que nunca lo alisara o usara un alaciado permanente aunque quisiera
hacerlo, hasta que fuera mayor para darme cuenta de que amo mi cabello y
que no hay nada de malo en el . Eso no cambia el hecho de que la gente
quiera constantemente alasiarlo o preguntarme por qué no lo hago o que
nunca pude encontrar un solo producto para cabello afro en México.
Pero pensé que al llegar a Senegal, donde todos los artistas y la mayoría
de los anuncios presentan personas negras, estas connotaciónes y sus
preguntas se detendrían. Estaba equivocada. Es una locura que todavía
tengan toda esta mala connotación sobre su propio cabello. Veo cómo los
medios de comunicación tienen una gran influencia con todos los comerciales
y artistas que llevan una peluca larga y lacia. Sé que la colonización
tuvo una gran influencia en esto, pero como fue hace ya tanto tiempo pensé
que esta influencia ya se habría reducido o sería casi inexistente. Sin
embargo, es todo lo contrario, puedes encontrar más relajante que productos
para el cabello afro, todos los productos fácilmente disponibles tienen más
químicos que el laboratorio de mi antigua escuela. Encontré más productos
de cabello natural y variable en Gales que aquí. Puedo contar con una mano
la cantidad de chicas que he visto con su cabello natural y usualmente es
corto y no se usa con orgullo. Nunca había visto tantas pelucas y
extensiones. Su cabello es tan dañado, pero no saben por qué, no se dan
cuenta de lo mal que es lo que se ponen en el cabello. ¿ me preguntan
constantemente cómo tener un afro? Cuando tienen el mismo cabello que yo,
simplemente no tiene los productos para cuidarlo adecuadamente, es por eso
que no crece, es por eso que se cae y la gente pierde su cabello mucho más
joven aquí.
Al no trenza mi cabello y el decir constantemente que no y que me gusta
más mi cabello afro , se ha vuelto una postura. No estoy diciendo que no
lo trenzaría, ya que me gusta hacerlo, es parte de la cultura y tiene mucho
patrimonio. Sin embargo, quiero mantener mi cabello Afro natural el mayor
tiempo posible, ya que no es común, porque me gusta y me doy cuenta de que
la gente comenzó a preguntar cómo lo mantengo así y no por qué.
