One of the most frequent questions I get about living in Brazil is that of safety. Though Florianopolis is one of the safest places in Brazil, with some of the lowest crime rates, I have done quite a bit of traveling through Sao Paulo (Brazils mega city) and Rio de Janeiro. And my consensus is, YES! It is incredibly safe. As a young, blonde woman traveling alone in South America there is a certain stigma that I am in incredible danger, but I'd like to tell y'all that I am just fine! There has never been one moment in Florianopolis where I felt like I was in danger. Of course you should always take care and be aware of your surroundings, but there is no need to worry or stress about your safety. Brazilian people are some of the most kind, hospitable, and warm people in the world. If anyone were ever to drag you into their house it would only be to feed you delicious food. It doesn't matter who you are, you are family here. People don't think twice about giving you a warm abraco and a beijo or two. So to all you future fellows, parents etc. don't fret! You, or your child will be in great hands.
