Sabunde Tubaco

My friend’s mom sent me a care package this month with bulk size items. Now I’m not one to complain when I receive a package with 80 packets of fruit snacks and a value size box of Frosted Flakes, but I couldn’t wrap my head around the 20 bars of soap she sent as well. Being that we have such little time left (a little more than a month), I wouldn’t need that much soap. So I gave some to the fellows throughout Kedougou and I still had too much left. That’s when I came up with the idea of selling them in the village market on Sunday. The word for foreigner in Pulaar is “tubaco” which is used by all the kids whenever we are spotted. So I decided to rename the soap Sabunde Tubaco (foreigner soap) to add humor to the product. Because of my love for the aesthetic of VHS footage and tacky commercials, I decided to make one for the soap at Dindefelo’s waterfall. All week, I have shown the commercial to my host family, neighbors, friends, co-workers, etc. to help me get rid of the rest of this soap!
