TS1 was a success! The entire cohort learned so much from the sessions and from each other. We are all fired up to tackle our remaining time here with a fervent desire to leave a positive impact in our communities.
One of the sessions we had was on Community Action Projects. As we read more and more about them we came to realize that the goal isn’t to outshine each other, the goal is to push ourselves as individuals to leave behind something that will stay with the communities. Many times we try to do something big and it all comes crashing down on us and we accomplish nothing. Sometimes it is better to do something small or lay the foundation for something bigger so that someone else can come and finish what you started. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
Another great session that we had was one on micro aggressions. Many times we say things that are unintentionally offensive to a certain group of people. You don’t even have to say it, many times we do this subconsciously. For example, I have a friend that is 6’3” and can lift 350 lbs. You immediately thought that my friend was a big guy right? Well you’re wrong, she’s a girl. I don’t actually have a friend that can lift 350 lbs but the micro aggression is there. Since I was talking about lifting many peoples minds will automatically drift to it being a male. This is just one of many situations in which people will just assume things about people without digging further. We were reminded to keep our minds open to many possibilities, and to not judge or assume things about people just because of what we initially hear or see.
